TUTORIAL 2 - Using SketchUp and Demeter to create and energy analyse a small office
Many thanks for your interest in Demeter - the SketchUp Green Building Extension from Greenspace Research.
Last week, we showed how to import a gbXML model into SketchUp and then run an energy analysis on it. This week we will show you how to use Demeter to analyse a model created from within SketchUp.
In this tutorial, you can create a model from scratch, or you can use our
attached SketchUp model.
Welcome to our second Demeter tutorial!
PREREQUISITES:
If you haven't already done so you can:
- Download the Demeter beta from: http://www.greenspaceresearch.com/demeter.html
- Register with the relevant version of Green Building Studio.
To complete the registration process you will receive an email to activate your account, you will not be able to upload projects until your new account is activated
- Create a GBS project for this tutorial:
- Login to GBS
- Create New Project called Demeter Demo 2.
- Make it an Office and select a location relevant to the GBS server you are using (e.g. a UK postcode for GBS UK or a US zip code for GBS US)
Tutorial
Now we’re ready to begin the tutorial:
- Open Google SketchUp and create a small office building. If you are unfamiliar with SketchUp, then it would be worthwhile to try SketchUp’s “Self Paced Tutorials” first. These are available in the “Help” menu.
If you do not have the time to create your own office model, then we have provided a demonstration file, simplemodel.skp, which you can use. All Demeter attributes are completed in this model, but, if you would like to add them yourself you can clear the model’s attributes by going to “Plugins->Demeter->Delete Attributes”.
If you would like to create your own office then a brief outline of how to do this is as follows:
- Using the rectangle tool, draw a floor plan. Maybe add a couple of internal rooms. You can design the office as you wish.
- Using the push/pull tool, now pull each floor into a suitably sized room and maybe add a roof to the building.
- Add some openings to your model using the rectangle tool. Maybe add a couple of doors and some windows.
- Make sure that all faces are facing the correct way (e.g. white side facing outwards). If a face is pointing in the wrong direction you can reverse it by right clicking on the face and selecting “Reverse Faces”.
- After drawing your building, add a section plane above your model. This is so that you can view inside your model when adding attributes. To do this:
- Select the “Section Plane” tool.
- Click somewhere above your model.
- Now you are ready to start assigning attributes to your model, to prepare it for energy analysis. To begin this click on the Demeter toolbar button or select “Plugins->Demeter->CubeDialog”.
- You should now see the Demeter 3D cube. Now you can start to identify zones in your model. Zones can be rooms or any other enclosed areas within the model. To identify a zone:
- Select each face that falls within the given zone (using ctrl+mouseclick or shift+mouseclick)
- When all relevant surfaces are selected press the “Create Zone” button.
- The cube should then spin to the space creation face where you can name the new zone. Give your zone a suitable name and then press the “Create Space” button.
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 for all the zones in your building.
- After you have identified all the zones in your model, you should now assign attributes to all the zoned faces in the model. This is required so that Green Building Studio can identify what each face’s purpose is. To start assigning attributes, click on the “Surface Definitions” button.
- The cube should now spin to the surface definition face where you should see a drop down tree containing zones, surfaces and openings. To assign attributes:
- Click on a surface or opening.
- Specify a name.
- Specify a surface type.
- After assigning attributes to each surface and opening in the model, you are now ready to energy analyse your model:
- Click the “back” button to return to the main dialog face
- Click on the “Energy Analyse” button. This will then take you to the energy analysis dialog.
- Now fill out the Energy analysis form as follows:
- Give the model a name by filling out the “building name” textbox.
- Select a building type for the model.
- Give the model a postcode (or zip code) by filling out the “Postcode” textbox. Please note that the postcode should be the same as in your GBS project.
- Now choose the version of GBS that you want to use to analyse this model, enter your login details and press the “login” button.
- A list of your GBS projects should now be displayed in the projects drop down list. Select the project that you wish to use for this model. If you do not see any projects in there then please follow the steps in the prerequisite section of this tutorial to create one.
- Press Demeter's “Send to GBS” button.
- You're done! A new browser window will appear informing you of GBS
energy analysis progress. After a few seconds you will receive a
very detailed energy analysis report and access to all the excellent
additional capabilities of Green Building Studio.
